Retail arbitrage and resale flipping
Retail arbitrage is the plainest business model there is: buy something below its resale value, sell it where the buyers are, keep the difference. Clearance aisles, liquidation lots, thrift stores, and online markdowns feed a resale market that runs through eBay, Amazon, Mercari, and Poshmark.
The people who lose at this buy on instinct. The people who last price the exit first. The engine answers the deciding question in one call: if I buy this item at this price, what do I actually clear after fees and shipping when it sells.
The job
Sourcing: clearance endcaps, liquidation pallets, thrift racks, estate-sale leftovers, and online markdowns. At the shelf, you run one margin check per serious candidate. It returns live eBay asking prices for the same item (each linked to a real listing), fee math for five marketplaces, net profit at the low, median, and high comparable prices, and a plain FLIP, THIN, or PASS verdict. THIN and PASS go back on the shelf; your discipline is the business.
Selling: list fast, price at or just under the median comparable, and pick your venue from the best-venue table, because the same item nets a different amount on eBay, Poshmark, and Mercari after each platform takes its cut. Before large buys, discounted gift cards and verified coupon codes lower your acquisition cost, which is the only number in this business you fully control. For used goods, a recall check keeps you from reselling something you legally cannot.
Who it suits
People who enjoy the hunt and can stay disciplined when the verdict says PASS on something they liked. No technical skill required; checking and listing are phone work.

The licensing question
No license to resell general merchandise in most places, with exceptions worth checking: some jurisdictions regulate secondhand dealers (registration, records, hold periods), some categories are restricted or unwise to resell (recalled products, certain cosmetics and food items), and some brands are gated on Amazon regardless of where you bought the stock. Flipping profit is taxable income everywhere, and marketplaces now report seller totals to tax authorities in many countries. Never resell a recalled product; the engine can check.

- Walk one clearance section and run the margin check on ten items you would have bought on instinct. Count how many come back PASS. That number is the tuition you did not pay.
- Set a floor for month one: buy FLIP verdicts only. THIN margins are for later, when you know your categories and your sell-through speed.
- List everything within 48 hours, priced at or just under the median comparable. Velocity teaches faster than margin while you learn.
- Track every flip in a spreadsheet: buy price, fees, sale price, days held. After twenty flips the spreadsheet will tell you which categories are yours.
