AI-visibility consulting for local businesses
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for “a good plumber near me,” almost nobody local shows up. Industry measurements put AI-assistant recommendation rates around 1% of local businesses, against roughly 36% for the same businesses in Google’s local pack. The owners can’t see why, and most SEO consultants are still selling last decade’s checklist.
This business answers the new question with evidence. You run a live scan of the client’s actual website, show them exactly which AI crawlers their robots.txt is blocking and which structured data is missing, and sell the fix work or hand them the punch list.
The job
A client gives you their domain. You run one scan and get back verbatim evidence: the robots.txt rules for fourteen AI crawlers, whether an llms.txt exists, what Schema.org data the homepage carries, whether name, address, and phone are machine-readable. The scan grades the site and orders the fixes by impact, with the exact lines and snippets to change.
You walk the client through the evidence, not a slide deck. They can open their own robots.txt and see the same blocked crawler you’re pointing at. Then you either implement the fixes for a project fee or sell the punch list as the deliverable and re-scan a month later to show the change.
Who it suits
Suits someone comfortable talking to small-business owners and unafraid of a robots.txt file. You don’t need to be a developer; the scan tells you what to change and where. Prior SEO experience helps you price it, not do it.
Startup cost and tools
| What | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine calls per client | ~$0.65 | One AI-visibility scan ($0.50) plus a local SEO punch list ($0.08) or content brief ($0.15) at public catalog prices |
| A way to take payment | $0–$30/mo | PayPal, Stripe, or a payment link |
| A one-page site | $0–$15/mo | What you check, what you charge, a sample report |
Engine prices are the live public catalog prices, the same sheet agents pay. No subscription is required to use them.
The licensing question
Website consulting is unregulated nearly everywhere. The honest-practice rules are commercial, not legal: never promise a ranking or a recommendation rate (no one can), sell the evidence and the fixes, and let re-scans do the proving. If you also run ads for clients, disclose any affiliate or platform relationships plainly.
How the engine does the heavy lifting
The engine fetches the client’s live site and reads the signals machines read: per-crawler robots.txt access for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and ten more, llms.txt, Schema.org types, NAP completeness, sitemap. The grade is computed from the evidence, so two scans of the same site agree, and every claim in your report is a line the client can verify by opening the same file. Country-aware local SEO and content briefs cover the follow-on work anywhere in the world.

- Scan your own site first, fix what it flags, and keep the before-and-after. A consultant whose own site grades “strong” opens every conversation from the right side of the table.
- Scan ten local businesses you’d want as clients. The ones blocking AI crawlers without knowing it are your warmest calls: you’re not selling, you’re showing them their own robots.txt.
- Set a flat diagnostic fee and a separate implementation fee. The scan costs you fifty cents; established SEO consultancies bill monthly retainers for reporting less concrete than this.
- Deliver the first three as paid pilots at half price in exchange for a re-scan testimonial once their grade moves.
- Offer a quarterly re-scan subscription. Sites drift, platforms change crawler names, and the re-scan is recurring revenue with near-zero marginal work.
